TEXTBOOK REPLACEMENT IS TOPIC OF PODCAST FEATURING ATI'S DR. BETH PHILLIPS

Aug 9, 2023, 11:20 AM by ATI Marketing Team

"We heard from many colleagues across the country that not only were students not reading their textbooks, many students were not even buying their textbooks anymore. Not only could they not afford them ... they didn't have the time or energy to read chapter upon chapter," said Dr. Phillips. "So we made a concerted effort to create a solution that gave the need-to-know content in chunks of very, very easy-to-digest materials that are incorporated with activities so that students can learn and then reinforce or remediate all in the same spot."

Dr. Marilyn Oermann, editor-in-chief of Nurse Educator, recently interviewed Dr. Beth Phillips, ATI Strategic Nursing Advisor, and 2 other esteemed researchers about an online interactive textbook replacement introduced by ATI called Engage Fundamentals.

"As somebody who has really thought about textbooks, especially print books over the years," Dr Oermann said, "some studies have suggested students don't read them, the font's too small, there's way too much text, and if you have a question, there's no resources right there for an answer. So I think that's one of the strengths of this textbook replacement."

Dr. Oermann encouraged listeners of the podcast, "Nurse educator tips for teaching," to read the accompanying paper on which the conversation was based. Published in Nurse Educator, "Benefits of an online interactive educational program over traditional textbooks," is available via open access.

The podcast episode, "Textbook replacement: Online and interactive," went live on Aug. 6, 2023, and can be listened to on on any popular podcast directory, such as Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, and more.
