"We have such a powerful voice," says Dr. Phillips. Educators must "talk it up amongst students that [teaching is] a viable option," she says.
Focusing on social cognitive career theory, Dr. Beth Phillips, ATI Strategic Nursing Advisor, and a team of 3 other esteemed authors within nursing education determined to identify what might lead an RN-to-BSN student to consider pursuing a career as a faculty member.
The four had initially written an article on the subject from a slightly different perspective (focused on ADN and other students) and were eager to see how the theory might apply to students who were already registered nurses. Their efforts led to a new article published in the January/February 2023 issue of Nursing Education Perspectives. That article, "It is up to faculty: An exploration of registered nurse-to-bachelor of science in nursing student intent for faculty role," led to the four being invited to speak on the topic in a podcast hosted by the National League for Nurses (NLN).
The podcast, "Unscripted Conversation" (Scholarship Track, Season 3, Episode 4). went live on July 18, 2023, and can be listened to on the NLN website or on any popular podcast directory, such as Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, and more.
"Unscripted Conversation: Scholarship" celebrates the published work of select nurse educators from the NLN’s official journal, Nursing Education Perspectives, the Division for Innovation in Education Excellence, and the NLN Nursing EDge blog. The conversations embrace the authors’ unique perspectives on teaching/learning innovations and the implications for nursing program development and enhancement. The Scholarship track is hosted by Steven Palazzo, PhD, RN, CNE.
