Dr. Underwood Smith has been a registered nurse for 28 years, with the majority of her clinical experience in perioperative and emergency nursing, along with 20 years in postsecondary nursing education. She earned her BSN and MSN-FNP at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia and her PhD in Educational Leadership- Community College Leadership at Old Dominion University. Her primary research focus has been on student retention and success, including intrusive interventions for high-risk students.
She has held positions as dean, director or faculty at all undergraduate levels of nursing education and is the recipient of several awards for innovation and excellence in teaching. She served on multiple local, regional and state-level committees in the areas of curriculum development, accreditation, student retention and engagement, program evaluation, faculty development, active learning, test blueprinting, online education, and student success. As a program director, she was actively involved in the recent development and implementation of a statewide concept-based curriculum into all Virginia ADN nursing programs. Additionally, Dr. Underwood Smith has extensive experience in both college and programmatic accreditation, serving as a team member and chair on multiple site visit teams, as well as on evaluation review panels.
