Description & Objectives:
This session was recorded live at the 2018 ATI National Nurse Educator Summit in Salt Lake City, UT. This session is presented by Rachel DeSoto-Jackson MA, MFA. 1 CNE will be provided upon completion. Attendees must submit a completed evaluation of the educational activity to receive their CNE certificate. Student nurses often report struggling with knowing how to talk to patients and how to demonstrate a caring and empathetic response. Applied Theatre offers many tools for creative and practical approaches to preparing these students to be future healthcare professionals with enhanced skills in interpersonal communication. Using methods common to the training of performing artists, this session will provide nurse educators with practical exercises and hands-on approaches for using theater to teach the “language” of empathy. Participants will be introduced to the L.O.V.E.™ approach for delivering effective empathetic communication. The exercises included in this session have been applied with nursing students in THE PERFORMANCE OF CARING course at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Objective:
  • Implement best-practices in the formation of high reliability organizations into schools of nursing.
  • Leverage the power of data to improve performance in schools of nursing.
