All nurses: 24 contact hours are required for every 2-year renewal period. A maximum of 12 of those hours can be independent study; any number of the 24 hours can be attended continuing education activities. All 24 contact hours must be earned within the specified earning period: For RNs, it is October 1st through September 30th of even-numbered years; for LPNs, it is October 1st through September 30th of odd-numbered years. For the first license renewal period, nurses must earn an additional 4 hours of board-provided continuing education related to board functions, the Nurse Practice Act, regulations, professional conduct, and accountability. Also for the first renewal period, the CE requirement is prorated according to the month and year of original licensure. To see how many contact hours are required (in addition to the 4 board-provided hours), see the table at http://www.abn.state.al.us/main/ce/ProratedCE.htm. If 6 months or less remain before the next earning period at the point when the nurse is originally licensed, CE is not required until the next earning period.

Within each 2-year period, nurses must complete two of the following: 30 contact hours of CE, 30 hours of participation in professional activities, and/or 320 hours of nursing employment. Note: In lieu of meeting the above requirements, licensees may qualify for alternative methods of continuing competency. All licenses and authorizations expire on November 30 (RNs) or September 30 (LPNs) of even-numbered years regardless of when first issued, except that new licenses issued within 90 days of the expiration date will be issued to the next biennium. RNs who receive their original license on or after December 1 of odd-numbered years and LPNs who receive their original license on or after October 1 of odd-numbered years are not required to provide proof of continuing competency for their first renewal.

Nurses must earn 15 contact hours during the 2-year period immediately preceding the renewal date. If the first renewal cycle is less than 24 months, there is no continuing education requirement for that first renewal period. (Licensees born in even-numbered years renew their licenses by the last day of their birth month in even-numbered years. Licensees born in odd-numbered years renew their licenses by the last day of their birth month in odd-numbered years.) Instead of earning 15 contact hours, nurses can fulfill the requirements by achieving a nationally recognized certification or recertification or by completing academic courses in nursing or in a related field.

RNs must complete a minimum of 30 contact hours in every 2-year renewal period. Courses taken for college or university credit can be used for RN continuing education, with one quarter unit equal to 10 contact hours and one semester unit equal to 15 contact hours. For the first renewal period after licensure by examination, nurses are exempt from the CE requirement. Each 2-year renewal period ends on or before the last day of the month following the licensee’s birth month, beginning with the second birthday following the date on which the license was issued.

HIV/AIDS is a one-time, 1-hour requirement to be completed prior to the first renewal. Domestic violence is a 2-hour requirement every third renewal. For example, if you renew your license on January 31, 2007, you are required to complete the Domestic Violence CE before the January 31, 2011, renewal. RN licenses expire on April 30 of odd-numbered years; LPN licenses expire on July 31 of odd-numbered years.

The expiration date for each license is the last day of the month of the licensee’s birthday. The renewal date for each licensee whose year of birth is an even-numbered year is in each even-numbered year.

There are several alternatives to the 14-hour requirement, including national certification. In addition, nurses licensed in Kentucky have a one-time requirement to earn 3 contact hours of approved domestic violence CE within 3 years of initial licensure plus 2 hours of mandatory HIV/AIDS CE once every 10 years. Nurses must renew their license by October 31 of each year. All nurses are exempt from earning CE hours for their first Kentucky renewal.
